Bayer is now launching acarbose, a novel drug for type II, or non-insulin-dependent, diabetes. They're calling it Precose in the U.S...and Prandase in Canada.
Acarbose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. Blocking this enzyme in the intestine slows the breakdown of carbohydrates to glucose. This reduces hyperglycemia...especially after meals.
Acarbose can be used with diet alone...or with other antidiabetic meds.
