You'll be more likely to care for a patient receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as its use increases.

ECMO relies on a machine that serves as a bridge for critically ill patients with cardiac or respiratory failure not responding to standard treatment. It takes venous blood...oxygenates it...removes carbon dioxide...and returns it to the patient.

ECMO is used most often in peds. But it's becoming more common in both pediatric and adult patients...due to better technology and survival rates compared to the past.
