Canadian health officials now say it's better to give an IM injection of vitamin K to newborns than the oral vitamin K.

It's given to prevent hemorrhagic disease of the newborn (HDNB).

The classic form of HDNB appears within the first week after birth...and a late form occurs at 3 to 8 weeks. Symptoms include unexpected bleeding...including GI and intracranial hemorrhage.
