Some experts now recommend routine screening of pregnant women for hypothyroidism...to prevent mental or neurologic problems in their baby.
About 2% of women have hypothyroidism during pregnancy. Problems can occur even if the woman is asymptomatic.
Women with undetected or inadequately treated hypothyroidism have a higher risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. They're also more likely to have children with lower IQs and developmental problems.
