Fosphenytoin is a prodrug...it's rapidly converted to phenytoin after administration.
The advantage is that fosphenytoin is water soluble. This means fewer infusion reactions (pain, burning, and tissue damage)...a faster infusion rate...and more reliable absorption when given IM.
