Experts are debating whether angiotensin receptor blockers should be used to prevent renal problems in type 2 diabetes.

ACE inhibitors are usually the drugs of choice to prevent diabetic nephropathy. Now there's growing evidence that angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) also slow the progression of renal disease.

So far Cozaar (losartan) and Avapro (irbesartan) have been shown to help. The other ARBs probably give the same benefit.
