new proton pump inhibitor called Nexium (esomeprazole)
October 2001
AstraZeneca is now marketing a new proton pump inhibitor called Nexium (esomeprazole)...their follow-up to Losec (omeprazole).
Nexium is the S-isomer of Losec. Losec has S- and R-isomers.
The S-isomer is metabolized slower...leading to more prolonged drug concentrations and longer acid suppression.
