Here's the latest thinking on treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Fosamax and Actonel are widely-used oral bisphosphonates. They increase bone density and prevent fractures by inhibiting bone resorption. But some patients can't take them due to GI side effects.
Zometa (zoledronic acid) is also a bisphosphonate, but it's given IV. It's recently approved for hypercalcemia in cancer patients.
