Patients who get clots in their legs and lungs usually get heparin for 5 to 10 days...followed by warfarin for 3 to 12 months.
Warfarin is usually NOT recommended long-term because of concerns about bleeding...despite the fact that these patients are still at risk for recurrent thrombosis.
