Health Canada just approved memantine (Ebixa) for moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.

It's marketed under the brand name Namenda in the U.S.

Until now, there was no specific treatment approved for SEVERE Alzheimer's. The cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, and Reminyl) are approved for MILD to moderate cases.
