Patients will ask you about alternatives to gentian violet now that Health Canada is removing it from the market.

Gentian violet is a synthetic purple dye...unrelated to natural gentian root used in some supplements. Some patients use it topically as an antiseptic...for bacterial or yeast infections.

Now Health Canada is advising patients to stop using gentian violet...due to a link to thyroid and other cancers in animals. This is a precautionary approach...so far there aren't reports of cancer in humans.
