Fewer adults with HIV will take antibiotics (azithromycin, etc) to prevent Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).
Prophylaxis for this opportunistic infection is no longer needed if adults newly diagnosed with HIV start antiretrovirals right away...and stick with them.
That's because HIV meds are more effective than before...and MAC infection rates have dropped. Now prophylaxis doesn't provide any extra benefit...but adds costs, side effects, resistance concerns, etc.
