New guidance will put focus on managing the risk of adrenal suppression in kids on oral or inhaled corticosteroids.
Adrenal suppression is a form of adrenal insufficiency. In severe cases, it can lead to adrenal crisis (hypotension, etc) when the adrenal glands aren't able to make enough cortisol during times of stress, such as during an acute illness or surgery.
We know that the risk of adrenal suppression in kids increases when they're taking high-dose or prolonged oral steroids.
