Ferric maltol (Accrufer) will be the first ORAL iron supplement that requires a prescription for adults with iron deficiency.

It’s not a slow-release product...but it avoids stomach absorption, since it’s bound to maltol, a natural sugar that breaks down in the small intestine rather than the stomach.

This may improve absorption of active iron into the body compared to other oral formulations, and with less stomach side effects...but so far this hasn’t been proven.
