Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis: Bat to the Basics

Questions about rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) are starting to bite...due to a recent alert about rising human rabies exposures.

Rabies is almost always fatal...but PEP prevents it when given promptly and correctly after an exposure, before symptoms start.

Refer anyone with a possible exposure to the ED or urgent care right away. These clinicians will need to work with the public health department to assess whether PEP is needed.
