Emphasize Daily Adherence With the New Oral Anticoagulants After Cardioversion
You'll see the newer oral anticoagulants (Pradaxa, Xarelto, Eliquis) used in patients with new onset atrial fib undergoing cardioversion.
We know that cardioversion sometimes converts patients back to normal heart rhythm. But it also increases the risk of stroke...if an atrial clot is dislodged during the procedure.
That's why anticoagulants are usually given in therapeutic doses for at least 3 weeks before cardioversion...to stabilize clots and decrease the risk of embolism.
