Patients are asking about drugs that interact with grapefruit.
A substance in grapefruit inhibits some cytochrome P450 enzymes. This can slow the metabolism of some drugs...allowing them to build up to toxic levels.
This substance hasn't been identified yet. It seems to be a bioflavonoid found mainly in grapefruit. But don't swear that it's not in other citrus fruits. It might be.
