new antiepileptic, Gabitril (tiagabine)

Abbott is introducing a new antiepileptic, Gabitril (tiagabine). It's coming out now in the U.S...next year in Canada.

Gabitril will be used as add-on therapy for partial seizures.

It's thought to work by blocking the reuptake of GABA...the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. The increased GABA levels "apply the brakes" to inhibit seizures.
