Statins should be used for hypertensive patients with atherosclerotic disease. Statins should also be used in hypertensive patients who have three or more of the following cardiovascular risk factors...type 2 diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, history of stroke, 55 or older, or male.
Low-dose ASA should often be added for patients over 50...but only after blood pressure is controlled.
