The new Canadian Hypertension Education Program Recommendations will reinforce many practice trends.
Statins should be used for hypertensive patients with atherosclerotic disease. Statins should also be used in hypertensive patients who have three or more of the following cardiovascular risk factors...type 2 diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, history of stroke, 55 or older, or male.
Low-dose ASA should often be added for patients over 50...but only after blood pressure is controlled.
