There's controversy over whether statins can CAUSE diabetes.
This is being spurred by an unexpected finding in the recent "JUPITER" trial. It suggests that patients taking rosuvastatin (Crestor) develop diabetes more often than patients on placebo.
A few earlier reports also suggest that some statins might worsen glycemic control.
