ORAL dapsone has been used for a long time for leprosy and other skin conditions. It was even used for severe acne before isotretinoin (Accutane, etc) became available.
But oral dapsone can cause hemolytic anemia and peripheral neuropathy. The topical form isn't associated with these toxicities because very little of the drug is absorbed systemically.
