Treatment with an anticoagulant (warfarin, etc) for 3 months is usually enough for a clot due to a reversible risk factor like surgery.

But it's a different story if the clot is unprovoked...or the cause ISN'T known. About 20% of these patients will have another clot within 2 years of stopping the anticoagulant.
