These GI infections are becoming more common and harder to treat...partly due to a more virulent strain. Widespread reliance on hand gels might be adding to the problem because they don't kill C. diff spores.
For the first episode of C. diff, recommend metronidazole for mild to moderate infections. Suggest oral vancomycin for severe infections...or if metronidazole doesn't work within 5 to 7 days.
