In fact in smokers, beta carotene might INCREASE the risk of lung cancer. Researchers recently halted a large trial early because they discovered this potentially detrimental effect.
Researchers are puzzled. People who eat FOODS high in beta carotene do seem to benefit. Maybe the benefit comes from something else in these foods. Encourage people to keep eating lots of fruits, veggies, and grains.
