managing high cholesterol

The Canadian Working Group on Hypercholesterolemia will focus renewed attention on managing high cholesterol.

Experts now recommend screening patients who have at least one risk factor...hypertension, smoking, atherosclerosis, abdominal obesity, men over 40, postmenopausal women over 50, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease.

Triglycerides won't be a focus for target levels anymore...but all patients will be encouraged to keep their triglyceride levels under 1.7 mmol/L.
