Nexium (esomeprazole) is the first proton pump inhibitor approved for "on-demand" use

Nexium (esomeprazole) is the first proton pump inhibitor approved for "on-demand" use in Canada.

Patients on long-term proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) take their prescribed dose less than 50% of the time. They prefer taking them PRN...it costs less and is effective in well-controlled GERD patients.

These are patients who have already received 2 to 4 weeks of a DAILY proton pump inhibitor for heartburn and/or acid reflux...and who don't have erosive esophagitis.
