Inhaled steroids are usually added to long-acting bronchodilators (tiotropium, salmeterol, etc) in patients with SEVERE COPD.

Adding an inhaled steroid may decrease COPD exacerbations...by about one exacerbation per patient every 4 years versus salmeterol alone.
