Recommend IM Ceftriaxone Plus Oral Azithromycin for Gonorrhea
You'll get questions about alternatives for treating gonorrhea now that cefixime (Suprax) is on backorder.
Patients often prefer cefixime because it's the only ORAL first-line option for uncomplicated gonorrhea. But a supply issue means that cefixime won't be available until at least Sept 2015.
Explain to patients that cefixime is falling out of favour anyway...due to increasing resistance. It's no longer recommended first-line in Ontario's guidelines...and the Public Health Agency of Canada only recommends it in high doses for uncomplicated cases.
