Help Avoid Common Errors With Transdermal Patches

Patients often ask how to use transdermal patches properly.

Clarify if cutting a patch is okay. For example, don't recommend cutting a patch that has the drug in a reservoir, such as brand Androderm or NicoDerm...this may lead to dose dumping. Also tell patients NOT to cut fentanyl patches...since exact dosing is critical.

Educate on proper application. Teach patients to apply patches to clean, dry, intact skin...and to rotate sites to decrease skin irritation.
