The American College of Gastroenterology just released new guidelines to prevent and treat ulcers caused by NSAIDs.
This is a big problem. Up to 20% of patients taking NSAIDs for arthritis get ulcers. Serious GI complications result in approx 400,000 hospitalizations and 8,000 deaths per year in the U.S. and Canada.
Prophylactic therapy is recommended for all high risk patients. This means people with a prior history of ulcers or GI bleeding... over 60...on a high NSAID dose...or taking corticosteroids or anticoagulants.
