Updated Canadian tuberculosis standards will help improve adherence to meds and prevent resistance.
Resistance is a big problem. The guidelines include a new category called "extensively drug-resistant" tuberculosis. These strains are resistant to isoniazid, rifampin, a quinolone...plus one or more of capreomycin, amikacin, or kanamycin.
Consider the potential for resistant tuberculosis before initiating therapy. High-risk patients include those previously treated for TB, travelling from a country with high resistance rates, exposed to another patient with resistant TB, etc.
